Movie: CHAPLAINS UNDER FIRE
An independent documentary that examines the lives and work of military chaplains and the church-state tensions at the heart of the chaplaincy. For some, the very presence of chaplains in war spells comfort — for others, it raises questions. Should the military be hiring clergy? Can the military tell them how to act? How does a Christian chaplain minister to a Buddhist? A Muslim? An atheist? And what about the increasing number of fundamentalist, evangelical chaplains who are serving?
To explore these questions, filmmakers Lee and Terry spent three months in 2007 in Afghanistan and Iraq examining the world of military chaplains through the lens of the troops they serve in combat and the controversies they trigger at home and on the battlefield.
Following the film, stay for a question-and-answer session with filmmakers Lee Lawrence and Terry Nickelson; film editor Andrea Hull; Baptist military chaplain Ben Sandford; and Charles Haynes, director of the Religious Freedom Education Project.
