MARCH 13 FREE INQUIRER CLUB MEETING

Free Inquiry magazine, Feb./March 2010, Vol. 30, #2: p. 27,
"Is the Universe Rational?" by Taner Edis

David Vangsness is this month's moderator. His suggested discussion questions are:

1. Is science fundamentally based on faith?
2. If so, how does this differ from religious faith?
3. What should we say to the religious who claim that science is just another form of religion since it is underpinned by faith?
4. Does the concept of the intelligibility of nature inevitably lead to the idea of an underlying intelligence?
5. If the universe is governed by laws, doesn't it logically follow that there must be a law-giver?
6. According to Edis, how is the claim that the universe is rational also a claim about the nature of reason?
7. How is ID fundamentally a claim about intelligence rather than design?
8. Why is the claim that the universe is rational a "god of the gaps" argument?

Free Inquirers Club is a discussion group based on articles appearing in the current Free Inquiry magazine, then on any topic desired by members (if time permits). Moderators post a series of questions they will ask at the meeting so attendees can prepare. Moderators make an effort to keep the conversations "on-subject", so please take some time to read the articles before the meeting so you can follow the arguments and better contribute to the discussion.Expect your opinions to be politely challenged!
