African Americans for
Humanism -- African Americans may be the nation's most religious
minority, but the churches and religious leaders don’t speak for many of us.
Today as in the past, many African Americans question religion and religious institutions. More and more of us stand for reason over faith. Freethought over authority. Critical thinking in place of superstition. Many of us are nonreligious; some are nontheistic.
African Americans for Humanism supports skeptics, doubters, humanists, and atheists in the African American community, provides forums for communication and education, and facilitates coordinated action to achieve shared objectives.
In an irrational world, those who stand for reason must stand together.
Tampa Bay Skeptics -- Well known organization that educates the public, is the major Florida media source for information about the paranormal, and a leading examiner of claims of the paranormal/supernatural. If you profess to be a Skeptic, please join and support the cause of critical thinking.
The Committee for Skeptical Inquiry -- The mission of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry is to promote scientific inquiry, critical investigation, and the use of reason in examining controversial and extraordinary claims. To carry out these objectives the Committee:
- Maintains a network of people interested in critically examining paranormal, fringe science, and other claims, and in contributing to consumer education
- Prepares bibliographies of published materials that carefully examine such claims
- Encourages research by objective and impartial inquiry in areas where it is needed
- Convenes conferences and meetings
- Publishes articles that examine claims of the paranormal
- Does not reject claims on a priori grounds, antecedent to inquiry, but examines them objectively and carefully
The Committee is a
nonprofit scientific and educational organization, started in 1976. The Skeptical Inquirer is its official journal.
Some of the founding members of CSI include scientists, academics, and science writers such as Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov, Philip Klass, Paul Kurtz, Ray Hyman, James Randi, Martin Gardner, Sidney Hook, and others. A list of CSI fellows is published in every issue of Skeptical Inquirer magazine.
CSI encourages careful, rational, critical examination of unusual claims. One of the best guides is a short piece by Ray Hyman, a professor of psychology at the University of Oregon, titled “Proper Criticism”.

The Council for Secular Humanism -- The
mission of the Council for Secular Humanism is to advocate and defend
a nonreligious lifestance rooted in science, naturalistic philosophy, and
humanist ethics and to serve and support adherents of that lifestance.
The Council is North America's leading organization for non-religious people. A not-for-profit educational corporation, the Council supports a wide range of activities to meet the needs of people who find meaning and value in life without looking to a religion. Its activities range from magazine publishing and campaigning on ethical issues to holding conferences and supporting a network of autonomous local groups.
Secular humanists reject supernatural and authoritarian beliefs. They affirm that we must take responsibility for our own lives and the communities and world in which we live. Secular humanism emphasizes reason and scientific inquiry, individual freedom and responsibility, human values and compassion, and the need for tolerance and cooperation.
CSH publishes the respected Free Inquiry magazine. The aim of Free Inquiry is to promote and nurture the good life - life guided by reason and science, freed from the dogmas of god and state, inspired by compassion for fellow humans, and driven by the ideals of human freedom, happiness, and understanding. Free Inquiry is dedicated to seeing that one day all members of the human family thrive by embracing basic humanist principles.

Living Without Religion. It’s really quite simple.
- We are part of the natural world. We marvel at the vastness of the cosmos, and we relish our place within it.
- We experience the universe as an active part of it, fascinated—and inspired—because we’re made of the same ingredients as butterflies and blue whales, giant sequoias and spiral galaxies.
- We see each other through humanist eyes—as fellow human beings—as cousins—equal in dignity and deserving of compassion and respect.
- We cherish our loved ones and treasure our short time in the world, so we tackle problems using the most successful methods ever devised—science, reason, and free inquiry—to improve our lives and enhance the well-being of everyone.
- We do not fear the unknown but rather take courage from the wondrous discoveries that have already been made.
- We accept that our lives will end, but we find hope and take great joy in knowing that life keeps going.
- We see ourselves as one tale among millions in the magnificent and ever-evolving story of life—and we are thrilled to be here.
- We are secular humanists, and we are living happily without religion.

This short video, made by people you recognize and admire, should give you encouragement. The methods and values of scientific thinking have expanded our knowledge
about life and our place in the universe. This modern knowledge—based on
experience and evidence—has brought enormous benefit to humanity, yet many
people still choose to rely on ancient texts and beliefs to guide their lives
and their nations.
The Center for Inquiry exists to change this situation. We are here to promote the scientific outlook, to expand the methods and values of science into all areas of human endeavor.
We invite you to learn more about the ways we are using education, outreach, and activism to advance reason and human values around the world. Then, if these values are as important to you as they are to us, we ask you to join CFI.
Let your voice be heard. With your help, we can ensure that our time—your time—will be a time of science and reason.
By clicking on the "donate" button, below, you may become a Friend of the Center. Click and see what benefits you will receive as a member. But, for a freethinker, what one can do and give is what counts most, don't you agree?
In a cultural climate that has become so hostile to science and secularism, the work of CFI is more important than ever. If you cherish rational thinking, science, and secular values, please join CFI today, and support your local Center for Inquiry-Tampa Bay all volunteer branch.
