Darwin Day 2010
February 6th, noon till 2pm.  Lecture at 1pm.

The Center for Inquiry Austin brings you fun for the kiddos and interesting lectures for everyone.  Come to BookPeople (6th and Lamar) to celebrate the birthday of one of the greatest minds known.  We'll have exhibits, activities, and birthday cake.  There will be fossils to hold and scientists to answer questions.  Dr. Dan Hardy will give a fascinating talk entitled "Darwin, Wallace, and Evolution."

At noon, author Dr. Jacqueline Kelly will speak and do book signings of her book "The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate," which just won the Newbery Honor.

"Darwin, Wallace, and Evolution”  By Dan Hardy

One of the most striking events in science is the independent development of the idea of evolution by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace.   Why is Charles Darwin identified with evolution, while Alfred Russel Wallace seems to be a footnote?   What was their intellectual and scientific background?    Did they always agree?    This talk on the history of science will answer these questions and will also throw light on current issues in evolution.

Dan Hardy has had a life-long fascination with nature and is an enthusiastic student of Darwin and Wallace.  He began bird watching when he was young and recently has focused on identifying and photographing butterflies.    He organizes programs and gives talks to the Austin Butterfly Forum and enjoys traveling and leading butterfly trips to Mexico.  He is a pathologist in private practice in Austin.
