Today opens the high-tech shrine to Yahweh's hot bestseller, the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC. But lest you think it's all about promoting Christianity, the folks behind the museum want you to see it differently. Michelle Boorstein at the Post reports:

Museum leadership has also worked hard to show it wants to be seen as nonsectarian, more of an open place to explore the Bible than to be evangelized — sort of a counter to the Creation Museum in Kentucky, which argues that the Earth is just a few thousand years old. Cary Summers, the Bible Museum’s president, was a consultant on the Kentucky museum as well. The museum board is made up almost exclusively of conservative evangelicals (mostly white males), and the museum projects an implicit and religious reverence for the Bible. ...

Generally unrelated to the subjects of this blog, I thought you should know that as I type, Zimbabwe's military has executed what looks like a coup against President Robert Mugabe, who is now 93 years old and looking to install his wife as his successor. The Post reports:

“We wish to make it abundantly clear that this is not a military takeover,” said the statement read by Maj. Gen. Sibusiso Moyo. “We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country.”

(Sorry for the late posting. I had a dentist appointment, and now I'm cranky.)

Rooooooooooyyyyyyyyyyy Moooooooooooooooore. Try not to spit your beverage all over your Bibles when you discover that Captain Commandments, someone who made abusing his power his raison d'être, abused his power at the expense of underage women. In case you're wise enough to stay away from the news these days, here's what Mister Covet-and-Shove-It was up to when he was a naive young man in his THIRTIES: coercing young women and girls (the youngest was 14) into sexual relationships with him.

Well this is unexpected. Ladies and gents, we have our first openly nontheistic Member of Congress, like, ever. It's Rep. Jared Huffman, Democrat of California. (The first was former Rep. Pete Stark, also of California.) Via Michelle Boorstein at The Post:

Huffman said that at the moment, he’s a “nonbeliever, a skeptic,” but he’s open to having his mind changed. “I suppose you could say I don’t believe in God. The only reason I hesitate is — unlike some humanists, I’m not completely closing the door to spiritual possibilities. We all know people who have had experiences they believe are divine … and I’m open to something like that happening.”

So I hear that the off-year elections were really quite something. I saw one journalist on Twitter refer to Republicans' beat-down last night as a "bloodbath." You already know the marquee races, but it's also very notable that the man who is said to be the most hard-right, anti-LGBTQ state legislator in Virginia, a guy who is known as the "chief homophobe" and devised the Virginia version of the "bathroom bill," was defeated last night, soundlyby a transgender woman. Danica Roem will be one of the nation's first transgender elected officials who also does this and really pulls it off.

News out of Bangladesh reported that police had arrested one of the men who attacked and killed Avijit Roy and maimed Rafida Bonya Ahmed in Dhaka in 2015. If you've followed CFI for a few years, you know that Avijit and Bonya's case is very close to our hearts, so we released a statement in response to the news, expressing a very cautious optimism for at least some justice...

A court-martialed former Air Force member who had been imprisoned for assaulting his wife and child, Devin Patrick Kelley, murdered 26 people in a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and injuring almost everyone else. Half the the dead are said to be children, as young as 5 and possibly as young as 1. Eight of the dead represent three generations of a single family, all within a town of about 700 people. Medical assistant Kevin Jordan avoided being hit and tried to get into the church to help...

So, what're you up to tomorrow? Any plans for the weekend? Me, well, I have a tech rehearsal for the play I'm directing, my daughter's got soccer practice, and, OH YEAH THERE'S GONNA BE A CIVIL WAR.

Some [alt-right] websites are telling their readers that antifa groups are “planning to kill every single Trump voter, Conservative and gun owner” this weekend.

Scott Pruitt, destroyer of worlds, gets his guidance for assembling his science advisory committees from the Bible:

In the book of Joshua there is a story about Joshua leading the people of Israel into the promised land after Moses passed away. And Joshua says to the people of Israel choose this day whom you’re going to serve. And I would say to you this is sort of like the ‘Joshua Principle’ that as it relates to grants to this agency, you are going to have to choose either service on the committee to provide counsel to us in an independent fashion or you can choose grants, but you cannot do both.
