Anti-Gay “Family Research Council” Co-founder Caught with Male Escort

May 6, 2010

The Huffington Post reports that George Alan Rekers, co-founder of the notoriously anti-gay Religious Right organization "Family Research Council," recently returned from a 10-day European vacation with a 20-year-old male escort he hired on a website called  The escort claims that Rekers is in fact gay, and asked the escort repeatedly to perform something he called "The Long Stroke," a special . . . well, let's just call it a form of meretricious services.  The Rekers scandal was also featured on a highly amusing clip from last night's Colbert Report.

Rekers claims that he hired the prostitute because he "can't lift luggage."  Why hire a gay escort to serve as a valet, you might ask?  Rekers explained in a Facebook posting that "I deliberately spend time with sinners with the loving goal to try to help them."

Bravo, Mr. Rekers, for hating the sin and really loving the sinner.

I should add: I think that two people broke the story, Brandon Thorp and Penn Bullock; Thorp is somehow involved in JREF, and Bullock is his partner.

This is great news.  One of the leaders of ex-gays can’t master his own desires.

The Religious Right has little to worry about. Interest in this particular scandal will fade when a new one hits the news, when Madonna gets a new puppy or next week. See the partial list on Wikipedia under the heading “List of Christian evangelist scandals.” We need to sponsor an annual Marjoe Gortner birthday party.

Unfortunately commenter #3 is right. Ted Haggard also didn’t produce the ripple many people, including myself, expected.
