I would be more surprised if he hadn’t said it than he had, but he doesn’t seem to have actually said it here - not the ‘hell’ word - regardless of implications of what he did say - ‘your votes will be recorded in eternity’ and ‘can they stand the test of Fire’. Ergo, the leader in this post is misleading I can’t link to his video, which is a good thing because I don’t particularly want to listen to his lunacy…. but Obama is the messiah anyway. I’ve seen a picture of him walking on water. Wee Bubblikans read their bible (literally) and I prefer pictures. With Obama’s face on them because he’s much better looking. He has honest eyes - unlike that Mormon compulsive liar.

IF you watch the slo-mo images in this commercial of a blacksmith forging words like MARRIAGE and LIFE, you realize that “tested by fire” refers to what the sponsors consider enduring values. Moral absolutes, in other words. That’s what “tested by fire” means as an idiom, too: purified, durable. Saying it’s the threat of hell not only goes beyond what the ad says, it’s kind of ignorant. No Christian of any sort thinks evildoers are “tested by fire” before attaining heaven. Scale it back a bit, John. There’s enough to object to in this spot without crying hellfire.

By CFI standards, this piece is restrained in tone. And crying “Hellfire” is what the religious right and “secular” left *do*. It’s like asking them to stop being what they are.

It’s interesting that even the HuffPoo misrepresents the idiom. “Mike Huckabee has a dire warning for Christians: When you vote on Nov. 6, hell’s fire awaits, and a vote for President Barack Obama will not stand up to the flames.” Aren’t they embarrassed at themselves? Does he actually say that?
The fundamentalist Huckabee knows his bible (in some sort of translation and interpretation). (Although I hate to prooftext like this) …Such as 1 Peter 1:6-7(NASB) 6. In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7. so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;”
I’m surprised so many atheists misrepresent the faith they generally formerly held so literally. It’s a demonstration of the narrow view they have of the religion they rejected and so often despise, with no understanding of the history and evolution of religious ideas. But aside from that, standing the test of fire is not synonymous with hell even to a fundamentalist moron like Huckabee is it? As a historian I have never belonged to a faith or believed, but precisely because I am a historian of the history and evolution of ‘ideas’, I could not be an ‘a-theist’ given what ‘theism’ can be and neither could I ever be “Christ”ian. But I live in the Antipodes where the majority of religion today, Christian, Muslim or other is either ‘atheist’ (like “Christianity without God”), agnostic, metaphorical etc, evolved, educated, with or without an idea of ‘God’ and religious people live in a secular society for the benefit of all.
Fire is a symbol of purification. Just be honest. I thought only Romney told such ridiculous lies. What Huckabee said was ludicrous. So why the hell are you misrepresenting it and displaying atheist ignorance.

Jesus. We liberal Christians are mocked by “secular” lefties and condemned to Hell by the Huckabee-style nuts on the right. Maybe we need to form our own party.
