When Everything Falls Apart

July 17, 2015

The Morning Heresy is your daily digest of news and links relevant to the secular and skeptic communities.

Bahraini human rights activist Nabeel Rajab has been pardoned by Bahrain's king after his four months in jail for criticizing the government. Giving an interview to RT, he says:

This positive step towards me is a positive one, but you have thousands of other behind bars. They are behind bars just because of their struggle, or because they speak, because they criticize the government in a way or another. Those people have to be awarded and they have to be welcomed rather than to be put behind bars.

Another week, another mass shooting. In Chattanooga, the shooter (now dead), said to have ties to Islamist terror groups, kills four U.S. Marines.

Another day, another spate of suicide bombs: Boko Haram kills 64 in Nigeria

Scott K. Johnson of Ars Technica went to the Heartland Institute's climate change denial conference. "Serious scientific argument was thin on the ground." I bet.

A big Senate voucher amendment is defeated 45-to-51. But, Sen. Al Franken's anti-bullying bill for LGBT youth is defeated, due in large part to Sen. Lamar Alexander who fears "costly lawsuits."

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission rules that discrimination by sexual orientation is already prohibited by existing civil rights law

Benjamin Dueholm at AeonISIS is not unlike Tolkien cosplay. But with real killing of course.

What happens to an advocacy group when it finally gets what it wants? Freedom to Marry, having now won its prime goal of same-sex marriage equality, will now happily close up shop. NORML, I hope you're paying attention.

The Dalai Lama and the Chinese government bicker over how reincarnation works. That's productive.

TLC cancels the Duggars' show.

A candidate for the leadership of the UK Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn, has been a supporter of homeopathy, and tweets what I think he presumes is a defense:

I believe that homeo-meds works for some ppl and that it compliments 'convential' meds. they both come from organic matter

Rebecca Leber at TNR looks at former White House chief of staff, and now Clinton campaign chair, John Podesta's intense interest in "the truth" about UFOs, and of the myriad FOIA requests on the subject posits, "It's somewhat surprising that they didn't seek to probe whether Podesta himself is an alien life form."

Ray Comfort sends Friendly Atheist's Jessica Bluemke a lovely gift basket with cheese after she pans his movie Audacity

Far-right, Nazi-sympathizing, anti-Muslim rallies are going to get started in Australia, and Muslims there are being urged to ignore them.

Steve Feltham, who has been "hunting" for the Loch Ness Monster since 1991, concludes that whatever people think they are seeing is really just a big catfish

This cute animation shows how the universe will eventually end, and folks, its dark energy all the way down.

Speaking of the end the universe, here's something the pope tweeted:

When everything falls apart, only one thing sustains our hope: God loves us, he loves everyone!

Now wait a minute. What's going to fall apart? What does he know that we don't?

Quote of the Day:

Not so much about a quote today, but a sentiment and a deed: Muslim groups begin a fundraising campaign to rebuild the black churches burned in Charleston:

Too often cowards inflict us with a crippling fear, but with encouragement and support from likely and unlikely places fear cannot stop us.

Common humanity, y'all.
