Atheist Will Give Tulsa Council “Prayer”
August 29, 2012The good news: the Tulsa, Oklahoma, city council will have its opening invocation given by an atheist in place of the usual prayer by some community cleric. The bad news?
The council chair (who happens to be Catholic) declared: "I'm not terrified of an atheist giving an invocation. There are things of value you can learn from any religious perspective."
Um, news flash: like secular humanism, atheism is NOT A RELIGIOUS PERSPECTIVE! (Ooh, I feel better now that I shouted.)

True. It’s rather too loud and exclusive to qualify as one….

While he may have not fully understood that his particular choice of words were somewhat religiocentric (if I could invent a word), I think his sentiment is terrific. Perhaps that’s something he will learn from opening his mind to new perspectives. I just want people to be accepting, they don’t have to be automatically and intimately knowledgeable about the subtleties of my opinions.

Or, worse, to investigate same and discover there are no subtleties.

While secular humanism isn’t a religion, it does offer a perspective on religion - that they are wrong - so I don’t see the chair’s statement as wrong.
