CFI Emphasizes Gender Equality at UN Conference
July 11, 2012
The Center for Inquiry (CFI) last week submitted a statement at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) 2012 High-Level Segment that emphasized the importance of granting women equal rights to fostering economic and social stability.
The weeklong High-Level Segment — part of ECOSOC's annual substantive session taking place this month at the UN Headquarters in New York City — brought together more than 500 UN officials, delegates and government representatives from member states, and civil society leaders for discussions on a range of pressing economic and social challenges.
The conference was split into two major sessions: the Annual Ministerial Review and the Development Cooperation Forum.
The Annual Ministerial Review, held July 2-3, focused on "promoting productive capacity, employment and decent work to eradicate poverty in the context of inclusive, sustainable and equitable economic growth at all levels for achieving the Millennium Development Goals." The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight goals that UN agencies and member countries are focusing on in order to end poverty. The Development Cooperation Forum, held July 5-6, focused on "reviewing trends and promoting coherence and effectiveness in international development cooperation."
CFI, which holds special consultative status as a non-governmental organization under ECOSOC, was among a small group of civil society groups selected to enter a statement for the Annual Ministerial Review. Our statement focused on the third of eight MDGs: gender equality.

The High-Level Segment ended on July 9 with the Ministerial Declaration, which detailed how to best move forward over the next year in order to accomplish the theme of the conference and all MDGs. I am glad to report that the Declaration includes at least a dozen references to empowering women.
