Holey Shroud Theory

March 14, 2016

Here’s a limerick I wrote about the Turin Shroud (at approximately the time I was writing my book, Inquest on the Shroud of Turin):
There once was a cloth
shown at Lirey
Thought the Shroud by
pilgrims most weary.
But now that pigment is found
On the image to abound,
Wholly holey is the
'holy scorch' theory.*
—Joe Nickell 2013

*That is the notion that the image on the cloth—supposedly that of a crucified man, but actually resembling the figures of French gothic art—was produced by a miraculous burst of radiant energy at the moment of Jesus’ resurrection.
