The Morning Heresy 8/23/12: Lonely Rick Warren

August 23, 2012

Your daily digest of news and links relevant to the secular and skeptic communities.

James Croft gives what I think is a refreshing review of what the heck it is we mean by "humanism," and being reminded, I like it very much indeed.

At Friendly Atheist, I review the candidates' paeans to faithiness in Cathedral Age, which I compare to the 2008 ring-kissing of Rick Warren by Obama and McCain.

Coincidentally! Obama and Romney this time around have declined to take part in a Rick Warren ego-inflation event, and Warren is pretending that he was the one who called it off because he's so disappointed with the tone of the campaign. Oh, Rick. Rick, Rick, Rick.

11-year-old Rimsha Masih, accused of blasphemy in Pakistan for allegedly defacing a Quran, is too terrified to speak, in solitary confinement, and has been assaulted. Christians are still fleeing Islamabad in fear as a result.

Ron Lindsay looks askance at the battle over whose policies are more in line with Jesus: the Nuns on the Bus vs. Paul Ryan.

LaRae Meadows reviews her experiences at SETICon, a conference on the search for extraterrestrial life, for CSI.

Michael Shermer's illuminating tale of lies about lie detectors by Fox TV, complete with alien abductions. (h/t Sharon)

Via AU, the new Air Force Instruction states:

Leaders at all levels must balance constitutional protections for an individual’s free exercise of religion or other personal beliefs and the constitutional prohibition against governmental establishment of religion.

But! Jason Torpy informs us that West Point is taking into account one's religiousness in a leadership test.

Christian flag is raised over city hall in Windsor, Ontario. (h/t Randy)

The Hug and Atheist documentary film project is still seeking backers.

The Economist kind of notices that there are atheists in the US.

Ben Radford analyses whether the Batman film franchise had any influence on the Aurora shooting.

Least believable headline of the day: "Knee Replacement Has Cheaper Acupuncture Alternative." Yeah, that sounds like a bad idea, guys.

Blogger at Forbes (!) comes down hard against a recent sexism-laden rant against Pussy Riot by Rod Dreher.

Green tea kills cancer! If, maybe, you drown a cancerous skin cell in a green tea extract compound. Drinking the tea? Not so much.

Niose in PsyToday: Progressives let the religious right win by not confronting, you know, religion.

Quote of the Day

Clarity from James Croft from the aforementioned post on what Humanism is:

A short version: a rational mind plus a heart aflame for justice = a Humanist.
