Episode 132 - Face-Off in Florida, Part 3
June 18, 2012
Part Three of a special presentation featuring Ronald A. Lindsay, Tom Flynn, Steven K. Green, EllenBeth Wachs, and David Silverman.
On March 2, 2012, the Council for Secular Humanism and the Center for Inquiry presented the opening session of their conference, titled “Moving Secularism Forward,” at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport in Orlando, Florida. The first session was titled “Face-Off in Florida.” It focused on church-state controversies in Florida, the state where the conference was held. This includes a pioneering church-state lawsuit – the first ever with the Council for Secular Humanism as plaintiff – that has religious conservatives so nervous, they are now on their third attempt to amend the Florida constitution to make the suit go away.
In this segment David Silverman, president of American Atheists and founder of the Reason Rally, puts Florida’s church-state conflicts in the larger context of national developments in church-state law and activism. He is followed by questions from the audience.
