Episode 133 - Ending Legal Protection for Religious Child Endangerment
June 25, 2012
Today on CenterStage, a special presentation featuring activist Rita Swan of Children’s Healthcare Is a Legal Duty, or CHILD.
On March 2, 2012, the Council for Secular Humanism and the Center for Inquiry presented the opening session of their conference, titled “Moving Secularism Forward,” at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport in Orlando, Florida. The luncheon session was titled “Ending Legal Protection for Religious Child Endangerment.” The speaker was Rita Swan, a former Christian Scientist who left the religion following the death of her infant son.
She founded the advocacy group CHILD to campaign against laws that shield from prosecution parents who withhold medical care from sick children on religious grounds. Her activism was instrumental in the passage of important new legislation that permits prosecution of Oregon parents whose children come to harm when denied needed medical care.
