Part One of a two-part presentation featuring secular humanist thinkers and activists Stephen Law, Jessica Ahlquist, and Daniel C. Dennett.
On March 3, 2012, the Council for Secular Humanism and the Center for Inquiry presented the last full day of their conference titled “Moving Secularism Forward” at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport in Orlando, Florida.
The gala banquet included presentation of the Council’s Forkosch Awards. The award for best humanist book went to English philosopher Stephen Law. The award for best article in FREE INQUIRY went to Daniel C. Dennett. The Council’s James Madison Award for Religious Liberty was presented to Jessica Ahlquist. the Center for Inquiry’s volunteer high school coordinator. In a nationally publicized lawsuit, she compelled the removal of a prayer banner from her high school auditorium in Cranston, Rhode Island.
The episode concludes with the first half of the keynote lecture by Daniel C. Dennett, professor of philosophy at Tufts University and codirector of its Center for Cognitive Studies. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and his books include Breaking the Spell, Freedom Evolves, and Darwin’s Dangerous Idea.
