Episode 194 - Opening Session Of First Full Day, Part 2

October 07, 2013

Part Two of the opening session of the first full day of the 2012 conference of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.

On Friday, October 26, 2012, the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and the Center for Inquiry continued their conference, CSIcon Nashville, at the Sheraton Music City Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee.

The panel was hosted by Richard Wiseman, professor of the public understanding of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, one of the United Kingdom’s foremost on-air explicators of science, and a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. It was moderated by Armadeo Sarma, chairman of the German and European Skeptics Societies and the European Council of Skeptical Organizations.

The panel began with a dialogue between CSI fellow and Executive Council member Ray Hyman and Jon Ronson, a writer and documentary filmmaker whose books include The Men Who Stare at Goats. Ronson is also a regular contributor to the Public Radio International program This American Life.

Discussion then turned to medicine, scientific and, well, otherwise. Presenters included Kimball Atwood, a practicing anaesthesiologist in Newton, Massachusetts and assistant clinical professor at the Tufts University School of Medicine; Harriet Hall, a CSI fellow known as “The SkepDoc,” a retired family physician who writes prolifically about science, alternative medicine, and quackery; and David Gorski, a surgeon at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and managing editor of the blog “Science-based Medicine.”

This far-ranging session concludes with a talk by Eugenie Scott, director of the National Center for Science Education.
