Episode 1 - What Is Secular Humanism?

November 02, 2009

A definitive statement on the agenda and aspirations of the secular humanist movement by Center for Inquiry founder Paul Kurtz. Dr. Kurtz recorded these remarks for distribution to local groups affiliated with the Council for Secular Humanism."What Is Secular Humanism?" is a question we hear frequently – sometimes from religious traditionalists who associate secular humanism with everything gone wrong in our society, sometimes from ethical critical thinkers who suspect the label "secular humanist" applies to them, but want to know more.

Paul Kurtz is founder and chair emeritus of the Center for Inquiry, the Council for Secular Humanism, and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. He is professor of philosophy emeritus at the State University of New York at Buffalo and Editor-in-Chief of Free Inquiry magazine. Sometimes called the "father of secular humanism," he is the author of essential books in the field including Forbidden Fruit: The Ethics of Secularism, Living without Religion: Eupraxsophy, The Courage to Become, The Transcendental Temptation, and many others.

Thank you so much for the opertunity to listen to these episodes.  It will be a great source for those of us in the ‘outback’ who cannot afford to go to seminars and conferences.

There must be a problem with Episode 1.  It will not play.  Better look into it.  Episode 2 played just fine.
