Cafe Inquiry
Cafe Inquiry is our monthly casual get-together to meet people and discuss topics of science and humanism. This month's discussion: Is relativism dangerous? Much contemporary philosophy and social theory hold that morality, perception, and even facts themselves are subject to interpretations that vary across cultures and world-views. Yet “relativism” is often a term of criticism and scorn, eschewed by its own proponents. Does relativism get a bad rap, or is its nasty reputation well-deserved? Without god or another authority to lay down universally accepted binding moral rules, can any moral consensus be achieved, and is such a consensus desirable?
