We aren’t just a pretty face on Pennsylvania Avenue—CFI/DC is a community center for freethinkers, skeptics, and humanists and for others who would like to find out what these life perspectives are all about. Don’t be shy; be part of the forum!
We have a Humanist Book Store with a selection of books on all aspects of humanism, from the classics by Thomas Paine and Paul Kurtz through the memoirs of Nica Lalli. We sell copies of Free Inquiry and Skeptical Inquirer and have an abundance of free information about events, publications, and discussions.
We host prominent speakers on political, social, and scientific issues. To find out what’s going on, ask to be added to our events list for announcements. Current events can be found on our website calendar.
We have a Humanist Book Club that meets the first Thursday every month from 6:30 PM through 8:30 PM at 621 Pennsylvania Ave. SE. If you would like to join and want to find out what book will be discussed, go to .
The Center rents its office space for meetings or presentations. It is conveniently located half a block west of the Eastern Market Metro; the 30, 32, and 36 buses stop almost in front of the office.
The CFI/DC office is also the home of the CFI Office of Public Policy, led by Toni Van Pelt, Government Affairs Director. The Office works with legislators to maintain the separation of religion from public policy and to promote reason, not faith, as the basis for policy. When necessary, the Office sends out “Action Alerts,” asking you to communicate urgently by telephone or email with your U.S. representative on legislation affecting humanist issues. To receive activist alerts, please send an email to .
Point of Inquiry podcast, hosted by DJ Grothe, is a weekly broadcast of conversations with humanists, scientists, authors, and scholars on a wide range of topics, www.pointofinquiry.org. We are an affiliate of the Center for Inquiry/Transnational headquartered in Amherst, NY. Digital resources, including videos can be found at www.centerforinquiry.net
As the nation’s only secular humanist think-tank, CFI offers extended discussions of issues that concern humanists, such as stem cell research, public health and contraception/sex education, teaching intelligent design vs. evolution in the schools, and scientific integrity in the U.S. government. On our website, go to Advocacy, Office of Public Policy, and Position Papers, where you will find a growing list of topics that affect individual rights.
