John Shook -The Philosophy of Paul Kurtz
(April 22nd - 25th)
This course
will explore the major dimensions of Paul Kurtz's philosophical writings. As the world's foremost
pragmatist, Kurtz has powerfully advanced secular humanism, liberal
democracy, scientific methodology, and pragmatic naturalism. We will explore the fundamental convictions about
life's values and intelligence's virtues that ground Kurtz's personal
philosophy and energize the public movement led by the Center for Inquiry.
R. Joseph Hoffmann - Secularism
and Unbelief
(May 19th - 23rd)

contemporary situation of secularists and atheists within a society often
characterized as "religious" or even "Christian." We will focus on the interaction between
secular values and principles within the historical context of the growth and
decline of mainstream ("liberal") American religions, the growth of
evangelicalism, the rise of protestant fundamentalism, and humanist responses
to these trends.
