Funded in part by the Coalition for the Advancement of Science Education

The program will include a series of speakers who will focus on the contributions of Darwin’s ideas to various aspects of modern science. There will also be a presentation with live animals by the Sawgrass Nature Center www. sawgrassnaturecenter .org   relating to animal adaptation .   There will also be science displays, raffles and door prizes , and activities specifically for children, as well as free birthday cake. Lunch and snacks   will be provided by the Broward College Science Club and available for a small donation. There is no admission charge to this special event.

A reception featuring the speakers and guests will follow the presentations. A donation of $10 is requested.

In addition to the animal adaptation presentation, speakers include:

Dr. Kevin Folta , http://www.kevinfolta.com/   , Dr. Folta is an Associate Professor of Horticultural Sciences and the Graduate Program in Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Florida . His presentation will focus on what the new practices of genome sequencing are teaching us about evolution.   Once you have a parts list it is easy to compare the parts between organisms and identify the specific parts that affect variations in morphology or development.   The human and chimp comparisons are absolutely amazing, and we have some from plants too. The activities in Kevin Folta’s laboratory extend from two broad research interests. The first is how light interacts with plants to tailor development and physiology to best match environmental conditions. The second laboratory focus derives from the newly emerging analysis of the strawberry ( Fragaria sp .) genome. Dr. Foltais the contributing author of the strawberry genome sequence to Nature Genetics and spearheads several international projects in strawberry functional genomics, genetic fingerprinting and marker-assisted breeding.

AronRa http://www.aronra.com is well-known to the internet, YouTube and blogger world as a champion of science and evolution. His well-formulated and highly accurate video series has been recommended and referenced by professional scientists and educators. He is acknowledged as among the most influential internet activists for rationalism in science education. This is a return engagement for AronRa. This year he will speak on “Evolution’s Erroneous Association with Eugenics”.

All presentations will be in building 47 Room 112. Each session consists of 45 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes for Q & A
