Born in 1930 on http://www.bellisland.net Newfoundland, # 7 of 5 boys and 3 girls. Our first assignment (both 23 at the time)—I include my wife, Jean, a teacher—came from my St. John’s, NL, Presbytery: It was an assignment to be the first resident minister/teacher team of a squatters’ town. There was no warning as to what to expect. Without any details as to what to expect, we were told, by letter, to go to Happy Valley, near Goose-Bay, Labrador. Later, we found that the so-called valley—it wasn’t—was about six miles from there, on the Hamilton River. There, July 18, we found a squatter’s town made up of 115 families—50 United Church, 25 Anglican Church, 25 Moravian families and, maybe, two Roman Catholic families. Within a relatively short time, we brought the scattered community together and organized a Union Church. This was without the 15 Pentecostal families who, because of their fundamentalist religion, decided to go it on their own. In 1954-1955 I did postgraduate studies (History of Ideas (religion and theology) at Boston University (founded by Methodists) theological seminary. Then I served (3 years) in Northern New Brunswick (Tide Head, near Campbellton) She and her husband, Wayne Adams now live in a floating house located near Tofino, BC.—Google search Floating homes, Freedom Cove, Tofino, BC. Catherine helped Wayne raise his two young children—a girl and boy—successfully. I did the wedding for the daughter who lives, in Sweden—Kjell Englund, a music and arts director. They have a daughter and a son—our two step great-grand children. Our son Turner (1958)—a musician and a teacher—also a grad of York U. His wife, Farah, is from Tehran—a liberal Muslim, graduate of York U and mother of our only three grand children. They live in Don Mills, just south of us.
