Bio

Born in 1930 on http://www.bellisland.net  Newfoundland, # 7 of 5 boys and 3 girls.
Attended university http://www.mta.ca  (philosophy/psychology and theology—1947-1951). Graduate seminary work at Halifax, NS   http://astheology.ns.ca/  Ordained 1953, in New Brunswick (Mount Allison University)

Our first assignment (both 23 at the time)—I include my wife, Jean, a teacher—came from my St. John’s, NL, Presbytery:  It was an assignment to be the first resident minister/teacher team of a squatters’ town. There was no warning as to what to expect.

Without any details as to what to expect, we were told, by letter, to go to Happy Valley, near Goose-Bay, Labrador. Later, we found that the so-called valley—it wasn’t—was about six miles from there, on the Hamilton River. There, July 18, we found a squatter’s town made up of 115 families—50 United Church, 25 Anglican Church, 25 Moravian families and, maybe, two Roman Catholic families. Within a relatively short time, we brought the scattered community together and organized a Union Church. This was without the 15 Pentecostal families who, because of their fundamentalist religion, decided to go it on their own.

In 1954-1955 I did postgraduate studies (History of Ideas (religion and theology) at Boston University (founded by Methodists) theological seminary.

Then I served (3 years) in Northern New Brunswick (Tide Head, near Campbellton)
Cedar Park UC, Pointe Claire, Quebec (3 Years)
Iondale UC, East Toronto (Scarborough, 5 years)
Willowdale UC, North Toronto (1966-1994, the year I retired)
Since 1988, I have lived in Thornhill—a beautiful area, just north of Metro- Toronto—0ver 2,000,000. Jean and I have a daughter, Catherine (1956), an artist and grad, in general arts and ballet, from York University.

She and her husband, Wayne Adams now live in a floating house located near Tofino, BC.—Google search Floating homes, Freedom Cove, Tofino, BC. Catherine helped Wayne raise his two young children—a girl and boy—successfully. I did the wedding for the daughter who lives, in Sweden—Kjell Englund, a music and arts director. They have a daughter and a son—our two step great-grand children.

Our son Turner (1958)—a musician and a teacher—also a grad of York U. His wife, Farah, is from Tehran—a liberal Muslim, graduate of York U and mother of our only three grand children. They live in Don Mills, just south of us.

In 1994, I chose to think of myself as a self-directed and re-directed, not just a retired servant of life.
Ordained in 1953, Jean and I became the first minister/teacher team at Happy Valley, Goose Bay, Labrador, NL.

OUR PHILOSOPHY? The holistic integration of body, mind and spirit—soma, psyche and pneuma.
=========================
With a nod of respect to Rene Descartes, who coined the phrase:
“I think, therefore, I am.” may I put it this way:
======================
I AM, therefore I think.Thinking leads me to know and understand the importance of wisdom; that I have the power to choose to be, or not to be.
It leads me, with the help of others, to take action and do the things I need to do, within the space and time I have, to be at one with eternity.

Willpower, Wisdom and Action lead me to be truly free.

This means that G~0~D power (note the ~0~—the Tildes & the zero) in me enables me to have WILLPOWER—the power of choiceI It is the power we all have—beginning with the Zero, ~0~ we were, to be at one with what I like to call G~O~D. Here the ~O~ symbolizes to the ALL that it Good, Opportune and Desirable.

            WILLPOWER
I am, therefore, this very hour,
I have the gift that’s called WILLPOWER.

It is the mighty power to CHOOSE,
To always win/win, and n’er win/LOSE.

To WILL, to think, to know, and act,
A powerful and love-filled fact.

I can choose to be so sad,
So very angry, or very glad.

What e’er I choose to think and be
I try to act creatively.

When life’s a win/win game,
No need for loss and shame.

I choose to learn the how
Of living in the NOW.
