Anonymity is one of the great gifts of the internet. This is why I have ceased to use facebook for the time being. I’ve been listening to Point of Inquiry for the last few weeks and figure I have some time to spend, so why not spend a bit here. Technically I suppose I could be called an agnostic theist, a term coined by my good agnostic atheist friend and co-worker ****** *****.

Still not sure what if any good will come of any contributions I could possibly give here. But if nothing else I suppose I am up for a good internet form style ego-stroking. It’s what the internet is good for, right?

So… any questions?

Hi, I am Ruth. A non- theist, Secular Humanist who is hoping to engage in meaningful, thought-provoking, enlightening, inspiring and mutually beneficent discussion with others. I really enjoy this aspect of life.

I am a multi-faceted being as are we all in our uniquely distinct way.

I spent 39 years of my life deeply enmeshed, inundated is more accurate, in religious discourse, either by force, personal inquiry or academically.

I hope this is a fulfilling avenue of intellectually honest discourse for me as it is something I have been seeking for a long time.

I am not necessarily anti-religious, I merely fiind religion a relic, an artifact, if you will, of antiquity.

Sincerely,

Ruth

Hello to ALL and Sundry!

New member; also a member on other “free thinker” forums under the same username.

Here’s a problem to “chew” on….I’m married these last 44 years to a woman who - four years ago - became a “born againer” (or “re-birther” if you wish).

It is impossible to begin a conversation about our divergent views as it most certainly will degenerate into an arguement.

What is a fella to do??

This video was given to me by someone over at ex-christian.net. The first part was actually developed by the owner of ‘the Thinking Atheist’ and the second part is my comments about it. It’s under 8 minutes.

After watching a debate between Drs Craig and Shook. I was a theist for about 25 years before concluding it was nothing more than a nonsensical, incoherent, irrational belief system based on nothing evidence based - all just presuppositional views/feelings. I also have concluded that Christianity is a sociopathic cult based on my experiences both in the cult and outside of it. I am in the process of writing a book about those experiences. I put out YouTube videos which discuss any and all aspects of the cult along with Atheist arguments against them. I also engage in numerous fist fights (not academic debates) with those still in the cult. This is done mainly on YouTube message threads that follow various videos in the same environment. An example is with the actual Craig-Shook debate where, if you scroll down to the messages, you’ll find me and others of our ranks engaged with the cultists. My YouTube tag is Atheism Defended and you can find my stuff over at

Looking back at my life I have finally found myself, after 68 years. The atheist philosophy fits me like a glove!

My CFI dilema

Hi folks. Somewhere along the line I ended up on the CFI’s mailing list, and despite having made no “Inquiry” into this organization, I haven’t taken myself off the list because I occasionally find the articles very interesting. But more often than not, I find the vague mission statements about pursuing science, reason and civil rights to veil an undercurrent of strongly anti-religious sentiment. Now, I’m not a professor of science, nor a candidate for sainthood, but I do identify as a Christian, and also consider myself to be a generally rational person (you will notice my screename is followed by a question mark, lest someone here disagrees). I like the CFI in theory. I don’t see anything wrong with inquiry, or fighting for the rights of atheists who are persecuted in direct violation of their constitutional rights. My understanding of skepticism is that it describes people who question established beliefs, and don’t take what they are spoonfed without a just degree of personal evaluation. I also understood that secularism was a neutral term describing a society without religious bias of any kind. When then, did these terms become synonymous with what I call missionary atheism…people who hold steadfastly to a core of fundamental beliefs, and tireless try to influence legislation and win people over to their way of thinking (what is that if not a religion?). I’ve had just as many people approach me attempting to disprove my belief in God as I have trying to convert me to theistic religions, if not more so. Every now and then I’ll get an email from the CFI about trying to free a jailed atheist. That, I can get behind. But then I’ll receive something announcing the news (with unrestrained glee) that more people in the USA are without religious affiliation than ever before. I don’t mind if people are without religious affiliation, but I do resent the implication that because I choose to affiliate myself, I cannot be a supporter of inquiry, constitutional rights, and rational thought. What about enlightenment era Deists, our founding fathers and Sir Isaac Newton, for example, who devoted their lives to pursuing reason while still believing in the existence of God. And then there are posts elsewhere on this board like “Religion: Is it good for anything?” I don’t know, let’s ask Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I came very close to having myself removed from the mailing list, but then I thought, “No, I support many of the core goals of the CFI, why not try to engage in a discussion with them.” I believe that people like me, who believe in God, but also have a healthy understanding of the separation of church and state, etc. have a right to a voice on this forum. Are there any others like me here, or are you all embittered atheists? am I in the wrong place?
