The Passion of the Christ. Scared the hell out of me.

I was hoping to hear of movies like, my favorite, Seven.

The Passion of the Christ. Scared the hell out of me.

It didn’t scare me.  It made me cry, because I cannot stand the thought that humans can be so cruel.  The truth is, humans can be that cruel and the crucifixion could have happened to anyone.  It did too.  Many people died via crucifixion back then and in many cases it was just as much of a horror.

I just watched 28 weeks later and thought that was a really insightful and creative way to make a horror movie.  The army human body count is probably higher than the zombies. I can’t think of anther horror movie that intelligently raises political concerns but still gives you a good zombie movie.

I like “The Frighteners”, with Michael J. Fox.  Sure it’s got some comic relief at the beginning, but once he gets into that old psychiatric hospital, having psychic flashbacks while trying to hide from that shotgun-toting psycho, it gives me goose-bumps.

I watched Sleepy Hollow over the weekend.  It was uniquely stylized, Johnny Depp is always great and there was a subtle conflict of science vs. religion prevalant during the time period.

Disturbia was pretty good and a little scary.

When I saw ‘The Passion of the Christ’ I thinked that Sarah Connors got easer to destroy the first Terminator than these roman soldiers to kill the Christ. And I really laughed out loud with the devil loosing his hair.

I love scary and fantasy movies. I agree that Sleepy Hollow is a great movie. Tim Burton is able to introduce very deep concern with the mood of a kid. I also loved Betleejuice…

I liked The 9th Gate, based on ‘El club Dumas’ by Arturo Perez-Reverte.

I don’t know if it counts as horror, but Jacob’s Ladder is a really good movie.  And it’s got the public news anchor from Anchorman in it.

The cover of this one is unpromising and the blurb describes it as pretty much a dreadful old crock of cliches (which it is), but it’s actually very well executed and well worth a look.

That and a whole load of subtitled Japanese, Thai and Korean films such as Ring, Ring II, Ju-on ("the Grudge"), the Eye, A tale of two sisters, Dark Water.

Don’t watch the American remakes though - they are dumbed down versions with daft back stories and they signpost every scary bit so that you can see it coming a mile away.

What I found scary, or rather disturbing, was The Ring.  However, there is a message behind it all though, which I can appreciate.  I just don’t like how they went about it just to make a scary movie.

I don’t know retrospy.  I’m afraid of scary movies.  They scare me. 

Did you see the parody of “The Ring” in “Scary Movie 3”?  I thought it was better than the real movie!

Anyway, more good movies:

“The Birds”—Alfred Hitchcock’s original, not the tepid 80s remake.
the “Phantasm” series—I think there were four or five, but I only saw the first three.
“The Thing”—the 1982 remake starring Kurt Russell.
