First, welcome to the forums, gary.

Just for those who didn’t read the link, Dawkins is going to appear as a guest star on Dr. Who—it’s neat news.

I used to watch the series back in the Tom Baker days. Fun series.

Major fan. Even corrupted my wife into watching. Unanimous verdict at our place: Tenant is a much better Doctor than Eggleston.
And Martha is definitely a much cuter traveling companion than Rose.

I have to disagree. I think it a shame the Eccelstone stopped so soon. He was like Tom Baker. Agnostic over the Rose/Martha challenge. They will both be in future episodes together so that might be interesting. Pity the fifth series is coming out in 2010, only 4 specials +xmas next year downer

I’m a sci-fi fan.  I have watched and enjoyed a lot of the shows.

I don’t know the name of the actor with the big hairdo and long scarf.  LOL

A long dry spell, indeed. A bud of mine keeps trying to get me into Torchwood, but it’s just not the same somehow. Heck, I can remember plopping down
to watch “Doctor Who and The Daleks” way back when I was a kid.

Dawkins?  A guest?  We don’t watch Dr. Who much, but maybe we should make a special point to watch it.  smile Welcome Gary.

So both Richard and his wife will have been part of the Whoverse. That is really cool.
Ecceliston was a one shot deal, and really, I don’t think the new series would have caught on as much without him to start things off on the right foot. That said, Tennat is my favourite doctor, followed by Ecceliston and then Colin Baker from the 80s.

I think Tennat is very good - I also liked him in “Dead Like Me” for those who watched that. My real interest is in the show’s creativity, not the particular actors.
Please understand that I do not watch much TV - the cheap American reality crap is mind-numbing. But I’m a sucker for much of the History channel, Sci-fi and nature shows. Nothing will ever replace books.

Thanks for the welcome.

There’s something we agree on, though Eccleston may have made a wise career move by limiting his tenure on the show.  His bit role in “Heroes” has been fun, for starters.

Tom Baker (not Colin). This is who Ecclestone reminded me off and for many he is the classical Dr Who - possibly because he did it for 7 years, longer than anyone else…

Yes when is Volume Three starting - the second half of Season Two? (It was much worse than Season IMHO).  Now the writers strike is over. grin

Richard Dawkins on Dr. Who?  Great!  He’s already married to Romana, so I guess it was only a matter of Time!  Get it?  A matter of Time?  wink

At to the other controversies brewing on these pages, here’s my contribution.  Martha was a better companion than Rose, hands down, no argument whatsoever.  I think Ecclestone was a better actor than Tennant, and he could convey the alien-ness of the Doctor better than anybody, but the stories they gave him to work with in the first season just weren’t up to scratch.  If you’ll remember, he always blundered around like he hardly knew what he was doing, and somebody else nearly always had to end up saving the day.  That was my biggest gripe.

Apart from the Martha/Rose issue I agree. Lets see how Donna fares. As for the scripts I find that Tennent’s doctor is too slick you know mostly he will come up with the goods and is pretty much always on top of things. And when not there are too many deux ex machina get outs - from having the Tardis recharge device to discharge to stop the cybermen when he first met them in alternate earth, to fixing Jacks time travel watch with a sonic screwdriver at the end of the universe. Time he lost that sonic screwdriver I say! As for Eccelestone he was made to rely more on his wits - as in the cliff hanger in The Empty Child, a great solution! grin

I’m a long time Who fan old enough to have cowered behind a sofa when the early Daleks used to come on. I watched Who right through from Hartnell to Davidson, giving up when Colin Baker took over and up to that point consider Tom Baker to be far and away the best Doctor.

I’ve watched Nu-Who since it started in 2005, loved both both assistants for different reasons and understand why Martha had to go, also rate both new Doctors ... Eccelston was excellent and was shaping up to be the definitive Doctor IMO but he left and Tenant filled his shoes superbly and now I can not envisage a better one.

I was extremely unhappy that Catherine Tate was going to be an assistant, wasn’t even going to watch but a 13 year old daughter can be very persuasive ... I watched and am really glad I did ... she isn’t the best by any means but she is good, she is witty and she is very professional. Russell T Davis is right to not listen to the fans ... it’s a good program in its own right and the fans don’t own it ... he should (and will) continue to do it his way.

Best episode so far, “Dalek” ... worst episodes ("Daleks In Manhatten” & “Evolution Of The Daleks").
