We received a call from a New York City area radio station this evening (1010 WINS) informing us that CFI’s story (see news) has hit the press. AP broke the story around 6:15 this evening. Derek Aroujo of CFI was instrumental in moving this story forward.

Strike another blow for the good guys.

Excellent, thanks PLaClair. Yes, I heard about this from Derek yesterday and meant to post on it today.

The right whines constantly about not being able to proselytize in the public schools. Ironically, a textbook from two of their own may have misled students into thinking that they’re not allowed to pray. They’ve become so intent on beating down their perceived opposition that they’ve completely lost sight of what they were supposedly fighting for.

Matt and Derek Aroujo are giving a live interview on RadioAmerica now, which is as far right as they come. Let’s all wish them luck. I’m sure I’ll be getting a report.

Yes.  And I take my at off to CFI and this brave boy, yet again, in appreciation for courage in the name of justice.

May I then also commend you, Paul, for the way in which you have handled and supported your son’s bravery.  You have much to be proud of.

Matthew is a troublemaker. See, it says so right here in the newspaper.

http://blog.nj.com/njv_editorial_page/2008/04/the_student_provocateur.html

He’ll be attending the New School in Manhattan. Because he is also a board member of the Secular Students’ Alliance and the president of CFI’s campus outreach program, he’ll be looking for ways to help organize and coordinate the coming rise of secularism. He has had feelers for radio programs, and is looking for ways to get our message out.

To give just one example, the radio talk show host Lars Larson (http://www.larslarson.com/) interviewed him last week. We were prepared for trouble, but Larson let Matthew talk. However, during the interview, Larson “reminded” Matthew that the Constitution doesn’t say anything about separation of church and state. Matt didn’t argue with him. He has his own way of winning people over. After Matt was off, Larson took calls. The first call was a praise session between Larson and his caller, both of them saying how impressed they were with Matt. When one like-minded caller was anguishing with Larson over why teachers can’t lead prayers in public schools, Larson started explaining to his own caller on his own talk show that public school teachers can’t cross that line between uh . . . I got the feeling that Larson knows better, at least on some issues, but has to please his audience. I don’t know that Matt had won him over, but it sure sounded like it.

Anyone with any ideas or forums to get Matt out there - let me know. I’m not too shy to say I think we have a winner, he has earned name recognition at a very young age, and I’m going to do all I can to help him. Help us out.

Matthew has an Op-Ed published in today’s Los Angeles Times. The Times also published a defensive piece by James Q. Wilson. Here are the links.

Members here should know that much of what Wilson says is false. For example, his claim that the 11th edition removes any minimal problems that were in the 10th edition regarding school prayer ignores the fact that the main statements remain, each of them stating the usual canard of the religious right that the Supreme Court has ruled that children may not pray in public schools. In addition, it’s amusing to see him call James Hansen (of NASA) and Michael McCracken (of the Climate Institute) “space scientists.” Oh no, Prof. Wilson would never use language to convey a false impression.

Well kudos to LA Times for publishing them both.  A statement that a key erroneous statement persists in the 11th edition would strengthen Matthew’s Op-Ed.  Wilson tells us to write him if we see any problems…
