ugh….what the hell are they teaching in school nowadays?

What makes you think that anybody is teaching anything in schools these days? This could make an interesting if somewhat sobering discussion in a separate thread but I think I can safely say that “Question everything and think for yourself” is not on the list of electives.

Hmmmmm, OK, now im curious.

I went to school in Vancouver, British Columbia (yes that’s CANADA) and there was no mention of god or Jesus in any grade from kindergarten to Grade 12. Well, religion was a small footnote to our studies of medieval times, and the Renaissance era in Grade 10 social studies. ....... in fact the only thing I actually recall from that class was my teacher mentioning something about the church telling people that their salvation could be bought, and that if paid money to the church,  they could get to heaven. My teacher straight up told us the churches have acted like a greedy business for ages now, and that the church collecting loads of money from the poor and middle class was nothing new.

Religion was not a part of my curriculum. Which would probably explain why I only found out in high school that Christmas was “the birth of Christ”

I went to a parochial elementary school and got taught Jesus on a daily basis until I was 14.  But once I went to a public high school, not so much of the Jesus talk anymore.

I recall in the second grade in 1937 in Rhode Island, the teacher having us recite the lord’s prayer* each day.  I don’t think the teachers in grades, 1,3, & 4 did.  And from the fifth grade in 1940 to graduation in 1948, in the Los Angeles public schools there was no mention of religion that I remember.

*It was the one that starts, “Give us our daily bread, , ,”, not the one that starts, “Now I lay me down to sleep. . .”  I don’t know which is which.

At the first school I ever attended, saying grace before lunch was a part of the daily routine. Once I changed schools, this little practice disappeared. Religion was still a part of the picture but only in the secular sense of all the usual Christian holidays…Christmas, Easter, Valentines Day, etc…being observed in some fashion.

Holidays from any other creed weren’t even on the radar screen.
