Part one of a two-part presentation featuring William R. Clark is emeritus professor of immunology at the University of California-Los Angeles.

On August 3, 2009, the Center for Inquiry – Los Angeles presented a lecture by William R. Clark entitled “Bracing for Armageddon? The Science and Politics of Bioterrorism in America.” Dr. Clark was introduced by James Underdown, executive director of the Center for Inquiry-Los Angeles.

The nation has spent tens of billions of dollars to combat exotic bioterrorist threats. Dr. Clark contends that in doing so it has failed to prepare adequately for the far greater dangers of natural outbreaks of pandemic disease.

Unfortunately, the man has a point. The advent of international air travel has made it technically possible for somebody with a really nasty infection, but who is asymptomatic, to spread his infection to every air hub on the planet in 24 hours.

All you need is for the index case to get on a plane, infect everybody aboard and they in turn infect everybody on every connecting flight that they board.

This sort of potential has got to be an epidemiologists worst nightmare.
