Pornography is, and has always been a sharp issue in the USA. It seems that there are wide ranging views on it from every point on the socio-political spectrum. In the last 10 to 15 years the internet has made it virtually unavoidable online. What are some skepic’s opinions?

Depends on the definition of pornography. I am from Amsterdam, Holland. The view on sex and it’s expressions has always been very relaxed and frankly I don’t understand what the big deal is.
I identified with the flower generation “make love, not war”. Of course, I am against mutilation and hard core sadism, but IMO that falls under the category of war.

I share W4U’s thoughts but add that I deplore any abuse of children. Innocence should not be robbed prematurely. I am concerned that beastiality, anal fisting, and many other things I would not have imagined at a young age are readily available to children.

It’s interesting to hear a European’s perspective, because it is so different from the American one.

Agreed, but the term"abuse of children” can mean different things to different people. Some people think that a child seeing any nudity what so ever is horrible, others encourage their kids to masturbate(which might be a little over the top). That’s probably why there can never be any social movement across the board concerning what is right and wrong.

There are lots of laws protecting minors. A minor cannot go to a local porno shop and buy magazines and toys, so it shouldn’t be that hard to restrict them from porn sites. It’s just technically difficult to do that. I could be a 12 year old girl for all you know.  tongue wink

In my opinion, even the most violent and disgusting form of porn (excluding children and animals, of course) is probably a good thing. It’s like the violent video games: if there are people who enjoy this kind of stuff, we are probably all better off when they do it in the virtual world (with “actors” providing the stimuli) then having them running around looking for the real thing. The best example is probably the Japanese hentai, where the perversion is hurting nobody and satisfying the needs of many.

I can see your point, but supplying the virtual product may make stronger their desire’s to satisfy their “reality.” That would not be a good thing. And the perversion to which you refer is anime. That’s not even close to the most vulgar stuff available.

Yes, I thought about that too. They should try to find out if watching porn affects people in similar way as the video games (according to studies, violent game do not make people more violent).

And on second thought—and this is indeed very difficult for me to even speculate about—maybe even porn with kids and animals is, well, a “good” thing. Think about it: thousand perverts masturbating to the same video of a young kid having sex is still better than having thousand perverts running around and looking for thousand kids to have sex with.

I don’t know that everything should be left to studies. When I was five, I loved Mighty Mouse. I went outside and swung a cat around and around, letting him go as he headed into a brick wall. He got up dazed, just like the cats MM threw around. I repeated my actions until the cat no longer got up. I had absolutely no idea I had just killed a cat. Although I was five, it still bothers me that I did that. Too bad I was not part of a “study.”

No, the risk of feeding the desires (I doubt it satiates the desires) is too great. I like to keep an open mind, but not so much as to allow the brains to leak out.  confused

Actually, there could be a way to see if internet porn has had any positive impact on our society. I imagine one of the major reasons why people get divorced is falling in love with another person. In most cases (not all) people “fall in love” for no other reason than wanting to have sex with another person; after a few adventurous nights, they realize they have never been in love. So, if some of the cheating could be prevented by porn, the number of divorces should be declining.

Okay, just looked it up: It is declining. Of course, Zeus only knows what the real cause here is.

Per capita divorce rates 1990-2005:
1991, 0.47%
1992, 0.48%
1993, 0.46%
1994, 0.46%
1995, 0.46%
1995, 0.43%
1997, 0.43%,
1998, 0.42%,
1999, 0.41%,
2000, 0.41%,
2001, 0.40%,
2002, 0.38%
2005, 0.36%

I just want to make clear that the above numbers don’t prove that internet porn is the reason why the divorce rate has been declining. It’s just that if it was not declining, then my assumption would be automatically wrong.

Like you say, only Zeus knows but you bring the focus here back to adults. I see no problems with adult porn and adults - although it does seem to be primarily a ‘guy’ thing.

Of course it’s a guy thing. We get attracted primarily by female beauty, while women put most emphasis on man’s status and his personality. (I should add a caveat here about cheating women around their ovulation period paying more attention to a man’s appearance, but women are complicated and this would require a new thread.)

Anyway, while women have romance novels, we have porn.

I said primarily a guy thing - I’ve know several women who enjoy porn.

Of course women enjoy porn, but the reasons are probably not the same as why we enjoy it. I imagine most women watch porn with their husbands/boyfriends and it would be hard to tell if they are really enjoying the porn here or rather the whole experience of watching it with their husbands/boyfriends. When woman watch it by themselves they are probably more likely to watch other women. Also, my guess would be that women who watch porn showing couples, are probably more interested in soft porn, which is more closely related to the romance novels.
