Hi Tom!
Hebrews Chapter 8:13 KJV:
In that He says, “A new covenant, ” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
I also suggest reading Hebrews 7 vs 18- Hebrews 8 vs 13.
Doug’s response would be a large minority amongst most christians today. His view is more legalistic and Judaic….simply meaning a person must Adhere to specific rules and regulations (the Jews of the OT had literally hundreds and hundres of laws above and beyond that of the Ten Commandments) in order to be saved. Another problem is that a person can never become more righteous. The only righteousness we have is IMPUTED righteousness.
There is a reason why Jesus came…..to fullfill prophecy and redeem us, to atone for our sins Himself. Only a Perfect person with no sin may enter Heaven. Thankfully Jesus did the works for us and if we believe in Him we are accounted worthy because He IS worthy. Nothing we can do as a person can make us worthy or make us even more righteous…..there is no more work which we can add or that has to be done because Jesus has already done the work for us.
This is what the passage is referring to when Jesus says not one jot or one title will pass from the law till all is fulfilled. The fullfilment will be complete when Jesus Returns. Until then the law must be in effect in order to meet God’s requirement…........A requirement which Christ has already fulfilled for us by his perfect life and death on the Cross.
Galations 5:4-9
You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump.
So justification comes thru faith….....and of course, if a person has True faith then they will bear fruits or good works.
