Today on Center Stage, a sweeping evaluation of the roles of science … and pseudoscience … in medical practice. Some people believe the distinction between science and pseudoscience is in the eye of the beholder; others argue that science is distinguishable from other fields because scientists rely on the systematic testing of hypotheses to gain knowledge. Pseudoscience can lead to false or misleading claims that are harmful to patients and obstruct progress in medicine. Are there reliable ways we can tell science from pseudoscience in the medical arena?

Brahm Segal, M. D., is chief of the infectious diseases division of the department of medicine and immunology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and associate professor of medicine at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
