Is the claim that the USA is a Christian country actually true? The thread about an atheist political party got me thinking. Is it possible that we are - what do you think?

I think you need to start by defining what a Christian Country is.
Well, the US government is explicitly secular—i.e. non-religious and non-Christian. For more on that read the First Amendment and the Treaty of Tripoli.

The establishment clause of the first amendment says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” which pretty much puts and end to any claim that we are a nation of any particular religion christian or otherwise regardless of what the religious right would like t believe. I don’t really think there is a debate here except among a bunch of ignorant fanatics.

A country where the majority of people claim christian identity - and will get pissed off if it is denied.

Yes, but what if the ignorant fanatics eventually have their way?

Ok, then it’s a Christian country although I don’t like the definition.

It could happen but they would have to rewrite the constitution or repeal the first amendment. I dont think thats very likely but of course we always need to be on our guard.

No, this is a country whose dominant religion is christianity and it appears to be shrinking with more people claiming a non-christian belief system, or none at all. Perhaps one day Americans will view the churches as a place to have weddings, funerals and pot luck suppers only!

No.
That seems to depend on whether you ask a Democrat or a Republican.
Fortunately along with atheists, agnostics and deists, there are enough Jews, Moslems, Mormons, Buddhists, etc., and Christians of splinter denominations who fear that they would be forced back into the dominant religion to prevent the dumb Christian evangelicals who think they are in the majority from changing the First Amendment.

That is how we got freedom of religion in the Bill of Rights to sart with. Too bad the (Southern) Baptists don’t admidt to their own history.
