WASHINGTON – Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich beat his main GOP presidential rival, Mitt Romney, to the punch by releasing his most recent tax return. But Gingrich still hasn’t revealed how he earned most of his $3.1 million. . .
gotta love this part
. . .The way Gingrich has earned a living in recent years has become an avenue for political attack by Romney. Romney charges that the $1.65 million Gingrich received from the government-backed mortgage company Freddie Mac from 1999 to 2007 was for influence peddling, which Gingrich has denied. . .
hmmm, so what did he do to earn over 200,000 a month? Sweep the hallways?
Oh keep reading
. . . “Mr. Gingrich’s claim that he simply engaged in `public advocacy’ doesn’t pass the smell test,” said Melanie Sloan, the group’s executive director. . .
Public Advocacy, but wasn’t Gingrich’s Fannie Mae paychecks a big surprise to everyone? What kind of public advocacy is done under a cloak of silence?
Then again, what happened to Gingrich’s “historian” angle… when’s the book coming out?
Personally i hope those guys claw each other to oblivion, then give the nomination to Santorum, with Bachmann as VP - now that campaign would be a real hoot.
PS. have you Googled Santorum lately, ugly yucky but somehow appropriate….... what would Lincoln say.
Did you see Newt’s hail Mary? He announced we will have moon settlements by the end of his 2nd term. Is he a “luna"tic? No he is trying desparately to overcome the overwhelming odds of free speech, aka money, that the GOP is leveling against him. Florida may well be his last stand, but it is the home of NASA, and many there may liike the idea of another moon race. This GOP primary is the craziest display that I ever recall. It is entertaining in a train crash disaster kind of way. Although I don’t like all the free publicity that they get. I mean 19 debates and counting? Reallly?
I don’t know how you can justify a secret pay check as being paid for public advocacy…. and even then that phrase reminds me too much of public manipulation and bribery.
As for moon landings by coorporations, what a dumb way to spend money? Shouldnt we be concentrating on the economy here on earth? I don’t see him doing well in the polls but I have been wrong before. I wish people would demand more transparency from their politicians, especially when it comes to their finances
Newt is a sideshow, though he may be around, debating, for a while to come. Romney will be the nominee and is who I would like to see more financial transparency from. He made >$21 million per year over each of the last couple of years. His taxes amounted to 13.9%. This came primarily from investment accounts that are located off-shore. I would like to know more about the investments. I would also like to see more than the past couple of years’ tax returns.
Romney will be the candidate because he pushes all the right (if you’ll pardon the pun) buttons. He looks and acts presidential, is a WASP millionaire and conservative in his religious views. His supporters could care less about the money he makes as long as it didn’t involve illegal activities. He’s a family man with no scandals unlike Newt the imperial and has name recognition from father and the Olympics. Most importantly he appears to be a moderate and could swing those uncommitted voters his way with a little coaxing. the pundits believe that he could give Obama a run for his money even if he does lose the election. Newt actually did him a favor by painting him as a liberal; libertarians may see him as the only way to see their agenda fulfilled. Can’t wait for the debate between Romney and the President. Obama can blast him for the multimillions he’s sitting on while Romney whines about how the government (a straw man to knock down even as he strives to be it’s head) is preventing people from getting jobs.

Cap’t Jack
Good analysis. The GOP is playing it smart, also, by placating Ron Paul, and making him feel like one of the guys. If Paul can deliver his voters to the GOP, it could make for a close general election. Romney’s sheer lack of consistency on any issue, determined by which ever prevailing political winds of the moment are in his favor, should be a detriment to him, but who can say. If the economy goes south, drastically, and the Romney forces spend more money on the campaign, we could well have a Mormon President.
Scary thought Tim, especially since he was just declared the winner in Fla. The CNN exit poll showed that most of those who voted for him did so because they felt that he can defeat Obama in the general election. We’re in for a wild ride indeed. Everyone had better get out the vote because Mormon or no, this fella’s going to be hard to beat!
I believe the reason Romney wiped out Gingerich in Florida is because he had more than five times the advetising than Newt had. What scares me is that between his money, that of the Koch brothers, and a number of other billionaires they’ll swamp the country with TV, radio, newspaper, Internet, telephone, and mail ads attacking Obama. Even though they will probably be lies, enough people may believe them that Romney could win.
All the disenfranchisement the Republicans have been doing quetly in a number of states will also hurt the Democrats.

“What? People will believe lies? Surely you jest.”

Don’t say that too loud Free, people will begin to believe….... oops too late it’s all over facebook and gang emails. Remember that picture? Obama didn’t salute the flag and then there was the swiftboat controversy, oh that was another election where the Dem. lost because his buddies lied for money! Like I said, wild ride a’comin’!!!!
