Someone like this might work if the economy goes in the toilet between now and the election, but if that happens, a lot of potential GOP VP candidates could be sufficient.

But if the economy goes drastically south, the independents could be more easily swayed by any alternative to President Obama. And the fabulously wealthy have just the “free speech $$$” to make that kind of swaying happen.
If Romney passes over Haley and other right wingers, is there a chance that the Teabaggers get frustrated and try to run a candidate as a third party option? That would be awesome.

I don’t think so. I think they are too inculcated with their mindless hatred of Obama, and that will overcome any sense of integrity to remain loyal to their extreme ideologies. Their forming a third party would absolutely insure another term for President Obama, and that is much worse, I would think, to a Tea Party member than a Romney ticket with even a progressive left leaning Repub VP candidate.
But I don’t think Romney can choose a progressive left leaning Repub as a VP Candidate (if he could even find one), because some of the base might become apathetic despite their hatred of Obama. The election will likely be too close for either side to risk having an alienated or apathetic base.
