That’s great. Unfortunately, three of those five will be going to college to get degrees in finance so they can become bankers, hedgefund managers, etc. I’d like to see methods of making science and teaching more attractive and business degrees less attractive to students.

That’s not likley to happen until they raise the pay for those professions! How many more Enrons do we need? We need more Hawkings though. A lot more!!!

Occam
Agreed. I’d also add that I’d like to see professions that actually produce something pay more than those that do not. Hey, I can dream.

Yep. Reminds me of the great lecture Martin Sheen gives Michael Douglas in Wall Street. Wish I could find it online but I can’t at the moment. He talks about how he contributes nothing. He creates nothing. He builds nothing. He only destroys. Great moment. (Douglas’ character, Gordon Gecko, was buying out Sheen’s character’s airline—only to tear it apart, lay off everyone and sell off the assets at a profit.)
Funny, but unfortunately more teens will always go into the “white collar” fields than science/engineering; it pays more, it’s easy, and for most humans, science is just too boring. The world is slated for more “Gordon Gekko’s” than “Frederick Banting’s”.
This hits close to home :-( First it was baking soda volcanoes, then model rockets. By the time my oldest was in middle school she was doing studies on smoking habits of high schoolers. I don’t know where we went wrong. Now she’s starting her PhD in immunology. I’m beginning to think she will never pull out of this downward spiral. Sorry, Dad’s have to brag sometimes

Boy, do you have something to brag about! Congrats. Believe me, they don’t all turn out that way. It takes a lot of good parenting to instill the love of learning in a kid.
