Close Encounters, ET were such positive thoughtful movies where aliens were nice guys. Now he seems to only put out shlock sci-fi where the aliens are bads guys on a par with all the other B-movie directors. What happened? He certainly can’t be going broke.
He may not be on the radar screen with anything that appeals to the likes of us, but he’s as busy as ever. If his best days are behind him, he didn’t get the news.
Maybe we met some real aliens and found out their true intentions?
That’s funny, because I sometimes wonder. If I was a big time director like Spielberg, I knew “the aliens were coming and they ain’t happy”, AND that the government would pay me a visit if I let the truth out, how would I warn people? Answer: make movies about it, and encourage all my director buddies to do the same. It just seems nowadays every other movie has aliens as bad guys. Ya it’s just pop conspiracy theory, but then again…

Ugh. ET was insipid. And Close Encounters was one of the most boring movies I’ve ever sat through. Not that I like Spielberg’s newer work. It’s all schmaltsy hack work. I just find his work trite and predictable. And a few notables aside (Indiana Jones freaking rules, except for that last unnameable abortion), it’s not my thing.
Now, I have no problem with movies where the aliens are good guys (or at least good guy-ish), I loved District 9, just…well, read above.

Hell yes! Another Spielberg hater.
I hated ET and Close Encounters also; The only movies he’s directed that I like are Catch me if you can, the first three Indiana Jones, Empire of the Sun, and Twilight zone: the movie.
