There aren’t many reasons Scientology won’t have billions of followers in the next few centuries, though possibly the sci-fi aspect of it may turn off some people who otherwise would be hooked.

Any strange cult could become the next big religion. It simply needs to stroke the emotions of people who are susceptible.
