DCT: First light image, Sombrero Galaxy

Lowel Observatory: DCT

“The Discovery Channel Telescope: A unique fusion of research and outreach

“Forty miles southeast of Flagstaff at the Happy Jack site, the DCT is complete. This 4.3-meter telescope rises seven stories above the top of a cinder cone. Lowell Observatory and Discovery Communications built this $53 million facility to push the frontier of knowledge and bring the marvels of the cosmos to millions

“The DCT will be Lowell’s flagship research telescope. Through our programming and online content, we’ll bring you an ongoing, inside look at the DCT and its fascinating science.”

What do you think of it, humanists?

I love it. About time the Discovery Channel got back to science.

Here here! And they did it in a big way. How about that Sombrero galaxy? Magnificent shot!

Awesome pic.

Perhaps Discovery channel funded the telescope with the money they made though their recent crappy programming.

I’ve been a member of Discovery Drivers for a while now.  We get to review and comment of all the new shows they have to offer, and there isn’t one I haven’t panned quite harshly.  I was sick of reality shows showing moronic people doing moronic things long ago when the first one arrived on the scene.

That they are finally not only reporting on science, but actually funding it, fills me with hope.  Let’s hope it’s a permanent change in their priorities and opinion of their viewers.

It is morally as bad not to care whether a thing is true or not, so long as it makes you feel good, as it is not to care how you got your money as long as you have got it.  Edmund Way Teale, Circle of the Seasons
