News or at least rumors out tonight of the death of Paul Kurtz, founder of CFI, CSICOP/CSI, CSH and a true legend of the atheist/secularist community. See HERE.

So did Kurtz convert to some religion on his deathbed, like his atheist friend who converted to Catholicism? Kurtz recounts this story in at least two of his books, so the prospect of that happening to him must have bothered him:

I know very little about Paul Kurtz, but nonetheless, I’m sorry to hear that such a dedicated rationalist has kicked it.

We are going to miss Dr Kurtz. I have met and have had many conversations with this most dedicated man. It’s now up to us to continue his work.

I started reading Free inquiry not long ago (discovering Mr. Kurtz), and ordered a few back issues, since it quickly became my favorite. The last article I read from him, his editorial “The Eupraxsophy of Hope” in the Feb/March 2010 was very fitting to try and begin to understand the kind of person he was. A great human he must have been if one of the first things I read from him, made me sit there staring at the wall for a while, my mind adjusting to some of the pessimism he just slapped right out of me ... not always an easy task. RIP
