What we have is individual persons that lack belief in gods.

That is exactly what atheism is, no more and no less. A lack of belief in gods.

Everything else is just overthinking the question.

What I’d really like to see doomed to extinction are people who are too thick-skulled to think about what other people tell them and insist upon clutching their pet beliefs despite facts.
