The key will be given to the woman to which they are betrothed and after the marriage rite she officially unlocks her hubby’s thingy to do the deed. if divorce happens, she locks him back up and hands the key to the next Missus to be. hey, if she has to wear a black sack ... ?

They’re for tourists and Saudi men. Obviously Saudi women are not welcome. I am behind this woman for doing the right thing, but it will do no good. Maybe she should have dressed as a Western tourist. The religious cops would have left her alone. All Muslim women should join together, burn their burkhas and stand up for themselves.

The problem is, Occam, that if you are a woman and you live in the Pashtun mountains or in the desert, you are inferior. That is, physically inferior. And you better believe it.

Sounds good to me. As it stands in Muslim countries it’s the victims of male aggression who get locked up and the perpetrators who roam freely. Nothing like protecting the women from the excesses of the men. This is the kind of thing that happens in patriarchal, dictatorial societies where victims have no rights.

If you are a Muslim woman in any society you are inferior. That’s the way Muslim men want it. It isn’t that far from how christian women have been treated over the millennia. It’s only recently that women have been able to get out from under male domination. Many are still under it and have been indoctrinated to think they should stay there. This is true even of modern, educated Western women who should know better. Just take a look at Republican wives.
Incidentally, physical strength has nothing to do with superiority or inferiority except in primitive societies. Women have shown many times over that their actual physical strength is superior to men’s, as is their ability to survive, bear and protect children. The only reason men have been able to have the upper hand is that they can knock women around. That certainly shows their superiority, doesn’t it? If men were truly superior, intellectually as well as in terms of brute force, they would know and appreciate the value of the women in their societies. Unfortunately, that is seldom the case. Men equate brute force with superiority. That has been the root of the problems in societies the world over.

You might get some disagreements on minor points, or maybe not. Mostly, though, I think you are preaching to the choir. (At least, I think a lot of us are in your choir.) So, preach on.

Yes there are physical differences between men and women when it comes down to brute strength. We obviously posess a different muscular structure, but women have been surviving in the mountains for thousands of years. However, brute force doesn’t denote superiority. The fact that I could lift my wife over my head and she couldn’t lift me off the ground didn’t make me superior, only stronger. Women can and have served in the military in combat situations that called for courage and cunning. In short, they can be as billigerent and blood thirsty as any male. The problem is being born into a culture that promotes the idea of overall female inferiority via a religious dogma (some god has cursed them or relegated them to a position of inferiority), or cultural trappings such as restricted clothing styles that sets them apart. Hey, we have it here too! Pentecostal women are required to wear ankle length dresses and not cut their hair. They wear it up in a bun called a “glory knot”. Men may dress any way they wish. Education is slowly eroding this primitive mindset even though the physical differences will remain. That’s why the Taliban pour acid on girls and even shoot them for attending school. It’s the only way to maintain their perceived superior status.
