The thread title is my own. It seems to me to be fairly clear that Santorum saw this little circus as an opportunity to belittle ‘liberals’ who are denying the free-speech rights of conservatives, and in the meantime, is protecting his $18,000 commission.

Basically, from what I saw, the sequence of events was: Grosse Pointe administrator cancels speech, Santorum accuses them of the liberal agenda thing, administrators reinstate speech amid community protest. Apparently, the original cancellation was for some miscommunication involving providing an advanced copy of the speech.
