Never mind that today’s birds are the evolutionary descendants of the creature pictured above.  I think that we can now safely assume the answer to the age old question: Which came first?:  Some descendant of the above creature evolved to be remarkably like, but not quite, what we consider to be today’s chicken.  That descendent laid an egg and inside was developing a mutated version of itself, that became the world’s first chicken. Thus, the chicken came second.  Its egg was first.  Ta da!

LOL

I was in Cleveland more than 20 years ago at a computer seminar.  Someone asked that old question and I said the egg came first.

“So what laid the egg?”, he asked

“A dinosaur!”, I said.

“I don’t think I want to talk to you any more.”, he said.

Glad you posted it here, Tim, rather than the Philosophy forum, because there it would turn into a multipage thread arguing about precisely what is meant by “egg”, whether the inside or the shell constitutes it, and if only the embryo had mutated or the shell also had been the result of a mutation.  LOL

A fish laid the egg.

I suspect the egg, from some other creature that was not quite a fish.  But if you keep going back, you will get to some creature that reproduces without the use of any sort of egg.  And whatever that was, it wasn’t a chicken.
