Rap music evolved from the so called “Jug Bands”, during late 1900’s.

Its really cool music considering the “instruments” the used and clearly shows the natural affinity to Jazz

Of course the blues can be traced back to those days also and the comparison to rap or hip-hop caught my attention also.  That song was written before 1924.

The song In the Jailhouse Now was written by [Traditional] and was first recorded by Whistler acc. by His Jug Band in 1924. It was covered by Memphis Jug Band,

But considering that but for technologly a lot of rap would not sound that different. Stripped from experience, a lot of these folk songs speak of personal and social poverty, hardship, and sometimes love.

Jazz, which includes all these forms of expression, basically has these fundamental laments as the foundation for the Blues.  Rap is the modern (much more sophisticated) way of tellin the same stories as the “juggers”

This song is combination of many styles and variations on a theme.

page 2.

And there are obvious parallels to be drawn between the use of such homemade or ‘nonmusical’ instruments then and similar practices in hip-hop, most notably ‘scratching.’”

For that matter one can trace blues, country and much of rock to those jug bands. Just like in evolution if you go back far enough everything is connected.

True, but it seems typically American.

Most definitely. Along with Jazz these are all American musical inventions. That Santana video is one of the best Rap songs I have heard. I typically do not like Rap. but it seems to be evolving into more melodic styles.

Also of note to this musical history: any jazz musicians who watches 8 Mile (with Eminem) will see immediately the close parallels between the rap sessions in that film and the cutting session in jazz. They’re practically the same thing.
