Aha!!!  I knew there was something nefarious about this website, and I just spotted it.

When you write a comment on other forums you have the choice to "Preview" or to "Post".

But not here!  We have the choice to "Prevew" or to "Submit".  Damn, religion sneaks in everywhere.  What authority am I supposed to submit to?  Sorry, I should have written, "To what authority am I supposed to submit."  Pesky prepositions.  :D

Hey, don’t complain.  At least I put this in "Off Topic."

Hmmm, what if I’m species 8472 (alternate universe - Voyager)?

Occam

Sorry, had the wrong species number.

Um…  You will be assimilated.  You technology and other advances will be added to our collective?

752 were the creatures that looked like large praying mantises, and destroyed the Borg each time the Borg tried to assimilate them.  They decided that our universe had to be sterilized ,and they were going to begin with humans.  They built a replica of Starfleet Academy and converted some of them temporarily into humans.  They even had Boothby there.  Janeway ended up working out an agreement with them that they wouldn’t destroy our universe and she gave them technology to prevent the Borg from entering their universe.

Since I’ve got a bunch of Trekkies handy—many years ago, I saw a program on PBS called “The Science of Star Trek”.  At one point, the Deep Space Nine art director was showing the host of the program (Bill Kurtis) around the set, and they stopped in front of a sort of mall directory, giving an alphabetical listing of the shops and offices located on the Promenade Deck.  This prop was never intended to really be seen up close, so the set designers had fun creating it.  How many of the various sci-fi references can you identify?  There are several which elude me.

Andoran Fast Food

I could handle some of them, but a few, particularly the Banzai Institute and Pancho’s Happy Bottom Riding Club seemed a bit far afield.  Perhaps Mriana can clear up some of these:
Cavor’s Gravity Devices,
Curry’s Martial Arts Training,
Del Floria’s Taylor Shop [sic],
Diet Smith Corporation,
Diva Droid Corporation,
Forbin Project,
Frederickson’s Squid Vendor,
Jacobson’s Used Photons,
Milliways,
Richarz’ Accessories,
Sirius Cybernetics Corporation
Spacely Sprockets
Tom Servo’s Used Robots
Vince’s Gym,
Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems

Wish I knew more of them, but Forbin Project is from the film Colossus: The Forbin Project about a computer that is constructed to protect the US from the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Good film, saw it when I was a kid.

Yoyodyne Propulsion I think is from Buckaroo Banzai, a great cult classic of a SF film ... maybe the Banzai Institute is from that film as well.

I know I’ve heard Spacely Sprockets somewhere ...

Thanks, I thought some of them were not Star Trek related.

Miliways and Sirius Cybernetics Corporation appear in Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide series. Diet Smith is the inventor of Dick Tracy’s wrist radio.

Well let’s see…

Cavor’s Gravity Devices:  http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Cavor’s_Gravity_Devices

Curry’s Martial Arts Training:  http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Curry’s_Martial_Arts_Training

Del Floria’s Taylor Shop:  http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Del_Floria’s_Tailor_Shop

Diet Smith Corporation:  http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Diet_Smith_Corporation

OK you get the idea of where you can find more info about the things you don’t know about. LOL

Now this is the one I want to know about:  Spacely Sprockets - http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Spacely_Sprockets

OK so that is all on the directory for DS9.  They’re all jokes much like you’d catch on LCARS Panel of the Enterprise, if you watch carefully.

Pancho’s Happy Bottom Riding Club IS rather obscure.  Remember the movie The Right Stuff, about the original Mercury astronauts?  Remember that little bar in the desert where the test pilots hung out?  Pancho’s Happy Bottom Riding Club!
