In a slightly modified version of the muppet movie saying, “They don’t look like Humanists to me.”  I found this link listed under the Humanist links on my MySpace (that is awkward) and was curious:  http://www.churchofhumanity.org/index1.html  I got red flags looking at the video, which seems like love bombing and their pdf (under the introductory link, which doesn’t download unless you tell the pdf to do so) has no evidence of Humanism.  Either my skeptism is working way overtime or they are not Humanist and I don’t know why MySpace has them listed as such.  Red flags went up just looking the site over.  I don’t know what they are, but they don’t sound worth anything.  The video sounds like an off shoot of scientology, with a few differences.  Anyone else get the same feelings about these guys?  Has anyone ever heard of the guy in the video, who says he is a founder of this “cult”?  OK I’ll admit he has some humanistic ideas, I guess you’ll call them, but he seems like he is just appealing to people’s emotions rather than logic, much like Fundies and cult leaders do.  Thoughts?  IF I’m right, I wonder if we should put a bug in MySpace’s ear.

I’m with you on this one Mriana, I see no evidence of Humanism, as I understand it to be. I’m guessing why it was linked was because it is a non-supernatural belief system with the word Humanity in it’s name.

I started out thinking it all looked to polished and vague, then when the video started I began laughing. Really poor new age cosmic consciousness stuff. Carl Sagan is often used by folks peddling the cosmic consciousness’ road to transcendence. I can think of no other reasons for that then, he did the wonderful Cosmos series, so they got the “cosmic” thing, he’s a scientist, and he argued for the possibility of intelligent life elsewhere in the cosmos.

I also think you make an excellent point by pointing out: “OK I’ll admit he has some humanistic ideas, I guess you’ll call them, but he seems like he is just appealing to people’s emotions rather than logic, much like Fundies and cult leaders do.”

Yes, and I’ve heard the same thing from others.  However, I still think MySpace should not have it listed with the other REAL Humanists link, like Secular Humanist’s website and AHA.  It could be misleading and cause those who are gullible to believe it is Humanist, fall for it and join on that basis.  It seems very deceptive to me, esp to the unknowledgable person.

You’re obviously a very caring person. Glad I’m in your camp. Outside of posting a comment of what we do know of this type of belief system, what else could we do? MySpace, isn’t that owned by Murdock now? Maybe he would help us Secular Humanist out on this one?

I try to be a caring person and glad to have you in my camp.  smile  I’m not sure who owns it, but someone who appears to own it is friends with everyone at MySpace.  I think his name is Tom.

He had me until he started with the list of “great questions”.

This delves into cult territory.

check out their store - they have a book on “remote healing”.  Yes, that does mean what you think it does.  My turn to roll my eyes and breath a heavy sigh.

I think that is what Scientology is, Charles.  Narwhol, I didn’t even bother with the store after I saw the video.  I had enough and thought these guys have to be bogus and why the hell are they listed under Humanism link on MySpace?  I know I’ve been wrong before about such things, but I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks something is wrong with this group and they should not be associated with Humanist or the Freethought community.  Unfortunately, I don’t know what to do about it or if there is anything we can do about it.

I don’t have time to bother with MySpace, but isn’t there a way to connect with the administrators to notify them of stuff like porn, threats, libel, etc.?  I would think you could file a complaint pointing out that it is mislabeled, and causes harm to real humanist sites.

I ran a search for Humanism in the MySpace groups section. I noticed the sponsored link for the ChurchofHumanity, but the list for Humanist groups on MySpace had me thinking, “Get a load of this sh….”

Here’s a few that would be better served under possibly, Religious Humanism, or Spiritual Humanism. The debate about “what kind of humanist are you” goes back quite a ways. The history of Humanism is really quite fascinating.

My favorites under Humanist groups: Spiritual Humanist Ministries , ILLUMINIST SYNDICATE (The freemasons) , The Saganites (Yes, Carl Sagan) , Post-Straight Polymorphously Perverse Post-Humans (Yo, Where Da Bitches At?) - (That last bit is not my remark, wish I did think of it though) etc.

But, I do see Secular Humanist United , Campus Atheists and Secular Humanists - CASH , etc.

I’m not bothered by the Spiritual Humanists, but the rest… Saganites should be under fan clubs, The Freemasons should be under religion or something, and the other two I don’t know what the heck they are.  Whoever is catagorizing them doesn’t seem to know what they are doing.
