The Origin and Practice of the Kabbalah Religion
Sunday, November 4
11 a.m. - $6.00
We all hear about pop celebrities who practice the Jewish Mysticism known as Kabbalah. But what is this centuries-old secret doctrine for pious Jewish men with expertise in rabbinic texts? How did such an esoteric teaching become widely available in English in bookstores and on the Web, in classes open to the public, and of interest to a diverse range of Westerners?
Author Jody Myers, professor of religious studies at Cal State Northridge, sheds light on Kabbalah in her new book, Kabbalah and the Spritual Quest. She explains how older, traditional Jewish teachers became popular and integrated with modern medicine, psychotherapy, and science. She traces the growth of the Kabbalah Centre movement from its beginnings in Israel in the 1960s to its transformation into an international religious movement that provides spiritual wisdom for upwardly-mobile Western urbanites of all religious and ethnic backgrounds.
Her book will be made available for sale and signing by Book Events and Authors Unlimited.
