George—have you read these books. Did you know how it turns out…{refraining from spoiler}

No, I have not. I’ve never much enjoyed fantasy literature of movies (even though I liked reading Jules Verne as a kid). But I will probably go to see the Golden Compass with my kids. Also, from what I’ve heard, the anti-religious message of the books has been muted in the movie. Have you seen this?

It hasn’t come out yet. I have read the trilogy. The first book is in some ways the best (maybe because you are seeing the characters for the first time) , it’s not anti-religious and it has a very engaging story.  A good friend of mine who is Catholic gave the 1st book to our son as a Xmas present many years ago, but this was before the 2nd & 3rd volumes were published.  It is an upbeat story in that the girl is a true heroine.

It is like the Harry Potter books in that it imagines a completely different world.  But it is more mature and doesn’t have comic relief [as I recall].
