There’s a hilarious parody video of the Tom Cruise Scientology video starring Jerry O’Connell (of Sliders fame).

The parody video can be found at Phil Plait’s Bad Astronomy website: http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/2008/01/23/tom-and-jerry/

Very, very funny.

I must say I have compassion for Cruise. It’s painful to watch. It’s proof positive that good looks are not coextensive with intelligence, in case you were wondering!

Hi George - sorry to be absent for so long.

I wonder if Nicole Kidman did Happy Feet and Golden Compass to spite Cruise…

I didn’t see Happy Feet; it’s anti-religion/scientology? Hm, none of my pastors bothered to warn us about free-thinking flightless waterfowl . . . .

I’ve heard that Hubbard perpetrated a deliberate hoax - is there really enough evidence for that?

Hi Kirk,

Yes, Happy Feet is an anti-religion movie; I really enjoyed it. Watch it!

As far as Hubbard is concerned, he is widely rumored to have said, “The way to make a million dollars is to start a religion.” I’ve heard this is probably not true, or at least there isn’t any evidence that he had said it.

As far as defamation goes, truth is a defense and these videos would seem to provide ample evidence for your defense.

I’ve always heard he did make that statement about getting rich by starting a religion not only to individual peiple but in speeches.

“You don’t get rich writing science fiction. If you want to get rich, you start a religion.”

-L. Ron Hubbard in a speech to the Eastern Science Fiction Association on November 7, 1948.

[quote author="Don Lindsay’s FAQ on the subject"]L. Ron Hubbard is widely rumored to have said “The way to make a million dollars is to start a religion.” There are also variant rumors. For some reason, this is often mentioned on Usenet. Evidence is discussed below, but the short answer is that it’s almost certainly true.

...

To summarize: we have nine witnesses: Neison Himmel, Sam Merwin, Sam Moskowitz, Theodore Sturgeon, Lloyd Arthur Eshbach, Harlan Ellison, and the three unnamed witnesses of Robert Vaughn Young. There is some confusion and doubt about one of them (Sam Moskowitz). Two are reported via Russel Miller: one is reported via Mike Jittlov: one reported in his autobiography; one reported in an affidavit; and one reported to me in person. The reports describe different events, meaning that Hubbard said it perhaps six times, in six different venues - definitely not just once. And the Church’s official disclaimer is now reportedly a flat lie.

Conclusion: He definitely said it more than once.
