I appreciate your thoughts.

Since I’ve given myself that strange feeling of committing myself to finding something out, I’ve spent a great deal of time listening to most of your podcast.

There is little doubt in my mind from what I’ve heard of substance and what I’ve read on this thread that you can really make your podcast fly. An unquestionable desire to do this right and get the message out is evident. It can’t be easy with school and pulling the show together.

It’s inspiring to see the passion you’re bringing to your project and the shear fact you have taken Rebecca Watson’s critiques to heart tells me this adventure of yours will be an open minded, sometimes outrages, shot in the arm for communicating science and reason.

What do you guys think about podcasting as a method of outreach for science?

I mean we are all here because we like a podcast. So its gotta be doing something right?

How many of us are ex-wooheads or religious people?

What is a woohead?

I think a lot of people get there minds in a rut while still in grammar school.  Since Sci-Fi books got me interested in science and showed me what to research on my own I try to promote that.  I learned about the concepts of atheism and agnosticism via SF books too.

Sorry,
Woo is a word that James Randi the magician uses for silly beliefs.

Mano,
You just made my day.

Hi Mindcore,

I quite liked your your first podcast but I have a few criticisms.

I thought you came across, especially at first, as somewhat uncertain (you also had what sounded like a tendency to get too close to the mic) and you concentrated a little too heavily on sex which I thought treated the listener as a bit dumb but nevertheless it was fairly entertaining. Personally I think you were overly sensitive to religious sensibilities but that’s just me ... maybe you figure you have to be to get them to be more rational and, since I ditched dance music for metal because I hated rap I wasn’t overkeen on some of the backing music but again that’s just personal tatste.

The bit I really, really, really loved was you ranting on about laws being theories (which of course they are and the fundy mindset tries to portray scientific laws as higher than theories and the latter as just “good ideas") ... it was a brilliant rant something like the ones I’ve gone on myself at times.

I will certainly listen to more of your stuff and I wish you good luck smile

Wow thanks,

Yeah I’m working on a lot of that stuff.

I’m actually avoiding sex as a topic for a while because of that. If you thought the best thing was the rant about laws being theories, I am planning on doing a lot of ranting about popular misconceptions about science.

Industrial is my favorite kind of music but metal will make it on.

I’m really into Doom metal, especially Morgion and My Dying Bride.

I’m also planning on interviewing metal bands on their views on science.

EDIT:
Ah the heady days of THE RANT ... it’s so, so, so ... therapeutic! The best thing about ranting at nutty theists is that it saves all the time and hassle of writing a well structured argument that you know they’re not going to read anyway or quote back bits out of context or some irrelevant biblical scripture ... you know the things the fundies do best!

That’s kind of serious really ... I’ve been debating these people full on for over 10 years and eventually you just get fed up, you end up cutting out the middleman (the intelligent bit you have to write, that you know they won’t listen to) and just rant. It won’t work, you know it won’t work and you get branded a bully by them (and sometimes by your fellows) but it just gets to the point where it no longer has one (a point!)!

Cool ... I’ll be there smile

Kyuu, I agree with your assessment, but there’s another side.  In response to “You’re preaching to the choir” is the statement, “That’s how you make them sing.” In other words, mindcore may not convince or have any effect on theists, but his rants may galvanize some young people to come out of the closet and voice their atheistic or agnostic views.  The more people who speak up rather than being quiet, the faster we’ll move away from religions.

Thanks Occam!

I think I’m trying to find a way to be outspoken about atheism on the podcast, but to still put the focus on science mostly.

I’m thinking about having a revolving panel, kind of how Bill Maher does it, where he has people who regularly disagree with him on the panel.

I have a lot of friends who disagree with me.
